The headline
The Ford F-150 Lightning is eligible for the $7,500 federal clean vehicle tax credit (Section 30D) at point of sale โ meaning it gets applied as a price reduction at delivery instead of waiting for tax filing. Eligibility depends on buyer income limits and the vehicle's MSRP cap (currently $80,000 for trucks). Sunrise Ford in Fort Pierce can confirm eligibility before you commit.
Income limits and MSRP cap
Buyer income limits for the federal EV credit: $150,000 single, $225,000 head of household, $300,000 married filing jointly (modified AGI). Vehicle MSRP cap: $80,000 for trucks/SUVs (Lightning), $55,000 for cars (Mach-E falls under SUV cap). If you exceed income limits, you do not qualify for the credit even if the vehicle does.
Point of sale vs tax filing
In 2024+, Ford and qualifying dealers (including Sunrise Ford) can apply the $7,500 as a price reduction at delivery rather than making you wait until you file taxes. This is the better path for most buyers โ instant cash flow benefit and no risk of mis-claiming on a return.
Florida-specific incentives
Florida does not currently offer a state-level EV purchase rebate. However: Florida has no state income tax (the federal credit is your tax benefit), Florida Power & Light offers EV-friendly time-of-use rates, and some FL utilities offer rebates on Level 2 home charger installation. Eugenio confirms current FPL or municipal utility rebates available in your area.
Charging โ what you actually need
Level 1 (standard 120V outlet): 3-5 mi/hr โ works for short daily commutes. Level 2 (240V home charger): 10-11 hr full charge from low โ sized to charge fully overnight. DC fast charging (public): 36 min from 10-80% on supported networks. Most Lightning owners install a Ford Charge Station Pro (48A) at home.
Home backup capability โ the Florida hurricane angle
Lightning Extended Range + Ford Charge Station Pro + Ford Home Integration System lets the truck back up your home for up to 3 days (average use) or up to 10 days (rationed). For Treasure Coast and South Florida buyers, this is a real hurricane-season benefit. Sunrise Ford coordinates the Charge Station Pro install with electrician partners.
Used Lightning credit
Used EV credit (Section 25E): up to $4,000 (or 30% of sale price, whichever is less) on qualifying used EVs from a qualifying dealer. Buyer income limits: $75,000 single / $150,000 MFJ. Vehicle must be at least 2 model years old, sold for $25,000 or less. Used Lightnings have started qualifying as the model has matured.
How to actually claim
Easiest path: buy from a qualifying dealer (Sunrise Ford qualifies) and have the credit applied at point of sale. The dealer handles the paperwork and you take delivery with the price reduction already applied. Income confirmation happens at delivery. If the dealer cannot apply it at sale, you claim on your federal return next year using IRS Form 8936.
