How the Florida out-the-door math works

Out the door = (price − trade-in) + 6% state sales tax + county surtax + dealer doc fee + title fee + registration. The trade-in is subtracted before tax, so it lowers both the price you pay and the tax. A manufacturer rebate cuts your cash but is still taxed on the pre-rebate price.

The county discretionary surtax only applies to the first $5,000 of the price — that's why it's capped between $0 and $100 no matter how expensive the car is. Full breakdown and a worked $40,000 example are in the Florida out-the-door price guide, and the fee side is covered in Florida dealer fees explained.

Questions Florida buyers ask

How much is sales tax on a car in Florida?
Florida charges 6% state sales tax on the vehicle price after any qualifying trade-in credit, plus a county discretionary surtax of 0% to 2% that applies only to the first $5,000 of the price — so the surtax caps at $0 to $100. On a $35,000 taxable amount in a 1% county that’s $2,100 state tax + $50 surtax = $2,150.
Does a trade-in lower my Florida car tax?
Yes. Florida subtracts a qualifying trade-in from the price before tax is calculated, as long as the trade is part of the same dealer transaction. Trade a $5,000 car on a $40,000 purchase and you’re taxed on $35,000, saving $300 in state tax. A manufacturer rebate does NOT reduce the taxable amount the way a trade-in does.
Does the county surtax apply to the whole price?
No. The discretionary county surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of a single vehicle’s price, so even on a $70,000 truck it caps at a small fixed amount ($50 in a 1% county, up to $100 at the highest 2% rate). Only the 6% state tax applies to the full price.
What fees come on top of tax in Florida?
Expect a title fee around $77 (about $86 for an out-of-state title transfer), a one-time $225 initial registration fee (waived if you transfer an existing Florida plate), a weight-based tag/plate cost, and a dealer documentation fee — Florida has no statutory doc-fee cap, so most dealers charge roughly $799 to $999.
