The short answer
For South Florida families, the Ford lineup splits cleanly: 3-row needs → Explorer (most families) or Expedition (8-passenger + serious tow). 2-row + cargo → Escape (compact) or Edge CPO (mid-size). Adventure family → Bronco 4-door. EV family → Mustang Mach-E. Pick by family size, third-row need, and tow capability.
1. Ford Explorer — most families' answer
The Explorer is the family-SUV sweet spot. 3-row seating (8 passenger with bench, 7 with captain's chairs). Up to 5,600 lbs tow with package. Trims from Active (value) to King Ranch (luxury) to ST (400 hp). BlueCruise hands-free for I-95 family road trips. Best fit: 3-kid families who use the third row regularly.
2. Ford Expedition / Expedition Max — bigger family + tow
Step up from Explorer when you need: real 8-passenger usability, more cargo (Max wheelbase), or tow over 6,000 lbs (boat, jet ski). Up to 9,300 lbs tow with the 3.5L EcoBoost High Output. Best fit: 4+ kid families, families with a boat, or families that road-trip with the third row full.
3. Ford Escape / Escape Hybrid / Escape PHEV — compact family value
Compact SUV for smaller families. Hybrid (41 mpg city) or PHEV (37 mi pure electric) options. AWD available. Best fit: 1-2 kid families who do not need third row, prioritize fuel economy.
4. Ford Bronco 4-door — adventure family
For families that hike, beach, off-road, or want a vehicle with character. Real third-row alternatives are limited (no third row in Bronco), but the 4-door has usable rear seat and cargo for 4-5 family use. Best fit: 2-kid adventure family.
5. Ford Mustang Mach-E — EV family
For families ready for an EV. 5-passenger seating, generous cargo (29.7 cu ft behind row 2, 59.7 cu ft folded, plus 4.7 cu ft frunk). Up to 320 mi range, $7,500 federal EV credit at point of sale. Best fit: 1-2 kid families with home charging set up.
Car seats and Ford
Explorer and Expedition: both have LATCH on outboard 2nd-row seats and one center 2nd-row position. Captain's chairs (Explorer Limited+ option) make car-seat install easier and provide walk-through to row 3. Escape, Bronco, Mach-E: standard LATCH 2nd row outboard. All current Fords pass FMVSS 213 standards.
